World of Wearable Arts – Nelson

Sixty international works of art have been received for New Zealand’s iconic cultural event, The Montana World of WearableArt™ Awards (WOW) in Nelson in September, 2004.

World of Wearable ArtsEntries have been received from the United Kingdom, Europe, United States, Australia and Asia, with Australia and Thailand boasting 20 entries each. Of the 295 submitted for the catwalk show, about 180 will make the final cut.

Launched 16 years ago as a one night affair in a leaky tent in rural Nelson, WOW sold more than 17,500 tickets to this year’s event within hours of release and extended the shows to seven nights over two weekends.

The brain child of Nelson sculptor Suzie Moncrieff, WOW’s concept is to take art off the walls and onto the body in a contemporary artistic showcase for emerging and experienced artists, sculptors, and designers.

There are no creative boundaries and past entries included materials as diverse as car parts, fish hooks, business cards, sausage skins, human hair, licorice, and salmon skins.

WOW’s vision is to eventually take the shows around the world, culminating with a worldwide competition to be staged in New Zealand.

For those who attend the show, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. Nelson boasts more than 350 local artists, some of the country’s top wine vineyards and the Abel Tasman National Park.

This year’s event will be held on 10 – 12 September and 16 – 19 September.

The judges include Dan Hennah who won an Oscar for his set decoration on ‘The Lord of The Rings – The Return of The King’, Simon Hames, a prop maker for ‘The Lord of The Rings’ and WOW supreme award winner, Margarita Robertson designer of New Zealand label Nom D and Nelson artist Sally Burton.
