The term “office design” has become synonymous with the confined cubicle. Ironically, the cubicle was created to safeguard us from the open plan offices of the past .
An open workplace environment has just become the latest office trend. Employees will be happier and more productive if they work together rather than being secluded behind office walls, according to the theory.
Individuals who work in open-plan offices are less isolated and have more opportunities for social connection. The open design can also stimulate creativity by allowing for spontaneous interjections.
Interns and less experienced members of the team may also benefit from rubbing shoulders with individuals in more senior positions.
Which is the superior option?
Employees who worked in an open plan environment were not as happy as earlier research suggested they should be, according to a recent analysis.
Employees cited a “significant lack of privacy” as one of the key sources of workplace unhappiness. They also expressed dissatisfaction with their jobs as a result of increased distraction and noise levels.
However, we must not take these numbers at face value. Few people can honestly state that they work every single minute of the day.
